What is a battery reconditioning?
Reconditioning your battery is about renewing your battery, more like giving life back to a dead battery. Most people doubt the competent of reconditioning batteries, that is why there is an easy way to do it yourself at home. The major reason why you need to recondition your battery is to remove sulfation from the battery.
Steps to reconditioning your battery at home
Prepare your battery
The first step you have to take is to prepare your battery for reconditioning. You need to clean the battery terminals, lots of build-up corrosions will be lurking around which needs to be cleaned, hence, you will have to wear gloves. Get familiar with the components of the battery before you commence. Get your baking soda and distilled water, mix properly until it becomes like paste, apply the paste on the battery post and clean it using a ball of steel wool.
If the corrosion seems too difficult you can use a toothbrush to scrub the area, the mixture will begin to foam to prove to you that It is working. Afterward, wipe the post with more baking soda and water, wipe, and let it completely dry out.
Check the voltage of the battery
This can be achieved by using your voltmeter. If you don’t have one, you can get one from the market it’s not expensive. Once your voltmeter is ready, connect it to the terminals, and check the reading. If it indicates less than 12.6 voltage, then have it in mind that reconditioning it will put it in the right shape and improve the longevity of the battery life. However, if it indicates 0, know that you will need to replace your battery because it must have suffered from a short circuit. Checking your voltage should be the next step after cleaning the erosion.
Empty your battery
The next step is to empty your battery, before doing this, you will have to put on your chemical resistance goggles to prevent battery acid burnt which is likely to occur. Using a screwdriver, remove the battery caps gently, you don’t need to be too hard while getting under the battery cap with your screwdriver. With a little push, your battery cap will come off easily, then gently pour the acid into a plastic bucket that is already on standby. While pouring the acid, ensure you take the battery far from you and pour gently to avoid spilling the acid. Once you are done emptying the acid, keep your battery and pour baking soda into the bucket with acid to neutralize it.
Clean the battery cells
Mix your baking soda and distilled water in a bowl, using a plastic funnel, pour the baking soda mixture into every cell on your battery. Ensure it is full, then put back the caps and shake properly to clean the inside. Although the battery will get quite heavy, this process is quite important. After shaking for a few minutes, open up the cap, and pour out the liquid. Now your battery is fully ready to be reconditioned.
Reconditioning your battery
It is at this point you need to refill your battery cells and you will need your distilled water and Epsom salts to make your electrolyte. Epsom salt can be gotten from a drug store, while it sounds surprising, it is actually very effective in reconditioning your battery. It helps in increasing the voltage of your battery and the amperage and stops sulfation which kills your battery cells. Mix your Epsom salt and distilled water that is boiling in a plastic bucket, stir properly until the water becomes clear. Once clear, your electrolyte is ready. Using a clean plastic funnel, fill up each cell completely, and if your electrolytes remain, preserve it for next time. Put the battery caps back on, shake again for few minutes then your battery is ready to be charged and put to use.
Charge your battery
Once you are done shaking your battery, remove the caps to be sure your electrolyte mixture does not overflow. Ensure your battery charger is placed far from your battery, and be careful not to mix things up, the positive lead should be placed on the positive point, and the negative lead should be on the negative point and allow your battery to charge slowly for about two days.
It is time to test your battery after charging. Using your voltmeter, if your battery is up to 12.3 voltage or above, then your battery is ready to be used, but if it isn’t up to, continue charging.
